A tradition to share.
King cake takes its name from the Three Kings who visited the baby Jesus. Its roots are in Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, which also marks the start of Carnival season. In New Orleans, sharing king cake keeps the celebration going through Mardi Gras.

A tiny baby. A big tradition.
The little baby figurine traditionally represents the baby Jesus. Whoever finds it in their slice is traditionally responsible for bringing the next king cake or hosting the next party—keeping the food, friendship, and celebration going.
Explore the tradition with New Orleans & Company and the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
